Ra Paulette digs cathedral-like, 'eighth wonder of the world' art caves into the sandstone cliffs of Northern New Mexico. Each creation takes him years to complete, and each is a masterwork. But patrons who have commissioned caves have cut off nearly all of his projects due to artistic differences.
Fed up, Ra has chosen to forego commissions altogether and create a massive, 10-year project, his Magnum Opus.
Go underground with a little known artist who’s dug caves by hand for 20 years
For the past two decades, Ra Paulette has been making caves. Working alone with only the few tools he can carry on his back – a wheelbarrow, a pickaxe, and a shovel – he spends hours each day excavating the soft sandstone of New Mexico to create his otherworldly land art. As patrons cut short his projects for financial or aesthetic reasons, though, Paulette struggles with ever-greater frustrations and lack of recognition for his work. But he won’t stop digging. Nominated for an Oscar® in 2013, this is a film that brings the viewer to a hidden land of wonders that is at once an artistic revelation and a reflection of the psyche of the man who built it.
