"Vernadsky" the only Ukrainian Antarctic Station, located on Cape Island Marina Galindez 7 km from the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It is open all year round and is a geographic and meteorological observatory. Station established a British expedition in 1930. Founded in 1953 as a British station "Faraday". In 1996, Ukraine was acquired for a symbolic price of one pound in Britain and renamed the "Akademik Vernadsky".
In 2011, the station built a chapel of St. Vladimir. Her consecrated Archbishop of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Lviv and Galician Augustine. Chapel is the southernmost places of worship in the world.
Due to lack of funding Ukrainian government, there is a threat of closing the research station "Akademik Vernadsky" in 2015.
