One of the Aegean's most atmospheric chapels, hooked like an eagle's nest in a cliff alcove, Panagia Kakkaviotissa calls to pilgrimage the tireless riders and contemporary retreatants. Do not flinch in front of the ascent: follow the path with the stone steps to the top of the mountain Kakkavos, heading to the roofless chapel, located about four kilometers from Myrina.
The unique view and the serenity of the landscape will compensate you for the ascent. An imaginary flight over land and sea and a journey back in 1305 when, in the dependency of the Monastery of Agia Lavra of Mount Athos, monks found refuge from Agios Efstratios to protect themselves from the Turkish raids.
They built a chapel in a position that probably has hosted an early Christian Church. Once the monks died, new ones were not coming, and the last ascetic decided to return to Mount Athos. Before leaving, he trusted the icon of Virgin Mary, the "Unwithering Rose" in a member of the family Moumtzi in Kontias and asked him to bring the icon to the temple every Lamprotriti (Tuesday after Easter). Then, according to tradition, he turned his cassock into a boat and sailed to Athos.
Even today, every Tuesday after Easter, the descendants of the family bring the icon to Panagia Kakaviotissa and many pilgrims flock to the feast to light candles in the chapel which has no high walls and roof, only a low courtyard.
