Church of Hallgrimur, Reykjavik, Iceland.


Named after the Icelandic poet and clergyman Hallgrímur Pétursson (1614-74), beautiful Lutheran Parish Church is one of the Reykjavik’s best known landmarks. Hallgrimskirkja is author of the Passíusálmar (“Hymns of the Passion”) and other works. Architect Guðjón Samúelsson, designed this Church with the Modern Nordic theme. It took about 38 years to build the church (1945-86), the tower was completed long before the completion of actual church. The height of Church of Hallgrimur, Reykjavik, Iceland is calculated to be about 74.5 meters.  It is the largest church in Iceland and the seating capacity includes around 1200 people. It is located in the center of the city and it can be viewed from all parts of Reykjavik. There is an observation deck near the top of the tower which gives great panoramic view of surroundings.
